Wooden Model Ship

Out of all the neighborhood in NYC, I probably know the Wall St./Seaport/Financial District the best. I spent 7 years, over the course of two jobs working down there. A lot of my favorite bars, restaurants and hangouts are down there as well.

I was in the neighborhood with a buddy, and I noticed a funky shack hidden away behind a container on the docks that I had never noticed before.

I strolled inside (the door was open) and the place was filled with nautical models, wood carvings, signs and statues in various states of completion. No one was around, so I snapped a few shots, because most of the pieces were absolutely gorgeous. The whole entire place had a 19th Century vibe to it, with not a modern tool in site.

After a few minutes, a gentleman walked in, greeted me, and asked what I was doing. I told him snapping pictures. He explained to me that he was a wood carver, and that he made pieces and did repairs for the ships at the South Street Seaport Museum. We chatted for a while, and he showed me some of his finished pieces, which were fantastic. A wooden book, with a carvin of poppies and marijuana leaves, was something he said "He thought I would like." Jeez, do I look that bad?

He showed me a miniature steam engine, that powered a miniature table saw that he built. A half finished figurehead of a woman for the prow of a ship. A sign carved in Latin. Overall, I was blown away to stumble onto this craftsman playing a fully Victorian trade in the shadows of Wall St. sky scrapers. His name is Sal Polisi, and I’ll definitely be back for another visit soon.

Cluster of young nettles

Perfect for picking – to make nettle ale!

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall recipes:
"We love nettles at River Cottage, turning them into everything from soup to gnocchi and tagliatelle and, yes, beer."

Ingredients
6l water
A small carrier bag of nettle tops, washed
Juice of 1 lemon, strained
Juice of 1 orange, strained
750g caster sugar
30g cream of tartar
5g yeast

Method: How to make nettle ale

1. Bring the water to the boil in a large pan.
2. Add nettles, stir, then remove the pan from the heat and leave to infuse for at least an hour until it is at blood temperature.
3. Carefully – you might want to enlist a helper at this point – strain the nettle liquid through a colander lined with a large piece of unbleached muslin into a large brewing bucket or pan. Once the liquid has filtered through, squeeze the muslin to get the maximum amount of liquid into the bucket.
4. Gradually add the sugar, stirring constantly to ensure it is thoroughly dissolved, then add the cream of tartar, and lemon and orange juice.
5. Finally, once the mixture is tepid, stir in the yeast. Cover and leave for 2-3 days in a warm place, until it’s obviously fermenting.
6. Remove any scum which has risen to the top in fermentation and siphon the beer into sterilised bottles and seal with corks.
7. Leave for at least a couple more days or up to a month before drinking.

Scotch Broom

Scotch Broom is normally yellow in color. But new strains are coming out and this blood red flower is the newest strain. I took this in my garden. They are not native to Washington State and are considered weeds. They are gorgeous weeds and the country side is all yellow and yellow with red spots for a few weeks.

Marijuana butter is a seasonal product, made from just the leaves of the bush when the buds are harvested.

A ball of dried weed leaves. Actually, it’s best to use fresh ones, but I didn’t have time to cook up a batch when the leaves were still fresh.

The best known Maryjuana is Iduki. Our man smokes in a Chillum (look at the intricate work on the chillum) procured from Goa and the smoke oozes out from his clenched hands….This is also a time, when time flows by or time stops ticking! Original photograph, no tinkering!
